A look back and ahead…
Two horses saddled by trainer Chris Englehart won with quick times on Friday. Head Heart Hoof recorded the fastest six furlong time of the season when he completed the first race in 1:10.06. However, the feat was outdone by Tough Shipmate who finished the eighth race in 1:09.79. Jockey John Davila, Jr. was aboard both rapid geldings on Friday and teamed up with Englehart to win three more races on Saturday. With a total of 73 victories on the meet, Englehart is on pace to surpass his own single season record of 141 wins which he set in 2006. Davila managed to get a little separation from John Grabowski atop the Finger Lakes jockey standings. He currently has a six win edge over Grabowski in what has been a tight battle for the 2009 jockey title.
Longshot(s) of the Week: Be Long Gone scored a one and one-half length victory in Saturday’s fourth race to give trainer William Berry, Jr. his first victory since 2005. The 6-year-old mare made her first visit to the Winner’s Circle since breaking her maiden on August 18, 2006. Jockey Rudy Ignacio guided the bay New York-bred to the upset victory at odds of 48-1.
Jockey News:
Elaine Castillo is expected to return to ride this week and is listed on two mounts for Friday.
