A look back and ahead…
The racing week was highlighted by large mutual payouts. On Friday, the early pick-4 returned $11,254.25 for a fifty cent wager and the late pick-four paid $98,725 for the same minimum bet. The superfecta wager in the ninth race returned $11,623.35 for a ten cent play. No one correctly selected all four winners of the early pick-4 on Saturday. The rare occurrence resulted in a three out of four condition with a return of $2,447.50 for every dollar bet. The early week windfalls were outdone on Monday when the late pick-4 paid $15,565.00 for a fifty cent wager.
Harris Drive scored a narrow win by a head in the first route race of the season for 2-year-olds. The Marialice Coffey-trainee held off a late challenge of Patricia Lee to earn the victory at a distance of one mile and seventy yards on Tuesday. Jockey Elaine Castillo guided the New York-bred gelding to the third race triumph.
Longshot of the Week: No Fear won Saturday’s fourth race at odds of 28-1 after reuniting with jockey Elaine Castillo for the first time since July 20, 2007. The Felix Monserrate-trainee was defeated by an average of 13 lengths over his last three starts with three different riders before the one and three-quarter length victory.
